Nursery Limara - Signature parrots

Renowned nursery

Limara has been a renowned breeder of more and less exclusive parrot species for more than 50 years. We only breed domestic and collection birds with a well-balanced build and a pronounced plumage, in a context of respect for nature, medical supervision and a professional environment.

No mass breeding

Meanwhile, Limara has been passionately breeding domestic and collection birds for over 50 years. Within the breeding programme, quality takes precedence over quantity. The number of cubs per year is strictly under control so that we can raise each young with the same care until it is ready to leave the nest. The first weeks of the animal's life determine its character and health.

It starts at the base

In order to approach the natural breeding process as closely as possible, we bring together unrelated birds so that they can choose their own partner. This natural selection guarantees a better basis for more sustainable breeding.

Sophisticated breeding process

Depending on the type of bird, we decide according to our breeding schedules whether to remove the egg from the nest immediately or after a few days or weeks. Then we incubate it in optimal conditions in our incubator. Fine parameters determine whether or not a hatch will succeed, including: the humidity which evolves with the growth of the embryo, a temperature which is adapted to the phase in which the egg is located, until the eggs turn periodically.

We let the birds raise their own cubs as much as possible, until they are big enough to be ringed. From then on, we raise them by hand to prevent their parents from plucking the feathers from the cubs. Often we allow the birds that are doing well raise their own young. Young raised in the nest are usually wilder, while young fed by hand after four weeks are tame. The age at which the bird can be entrusted to the new owner depends on the maturity of the bird.

Passport

Each parrot receives a personal passport on which the history and all medical parameters of the animal are recorded. As a result, we comply with the CITES convention. After four weeks, each bird is ringed with a closed Limara ring showing its origin. In this way we also keep track of its parents, so that later on we can certainly continue breeding unrelated birds. Blood is also taken to determine sex and the bird is tested against parrot diseases. Download a transfer document here.

Specialised equipment

At Limara, we are fully equipped with all the facilities that allow us to follow the breeding schedule without any deviation: tailor-made cages for breeding, nests equipped with infrared cameras, a feeding zone, state-of-the-art incubators and a medical care zone. In order to achieve the best possible breeding results, we approach nature as closely as possible in terms of housing and nutrition.
